September 2022
Week 1
Broome to Darwin

Picked Sara up from Airport and made our way to Coles to pickup the essentials.  Salad and cooked salmon, the standard meal on the road now that Sara has joined in on the journey.

Took Bucky onto Cable beach and enjoyed the sunset, was unable to swim due to recent shark sightings.  We then spent the night at Broome Gateway Caravan park for $36 a night.

Early in the morning we filled the tank with fresh water and made our way to our first free campsite Mary Pool Campsite.  We parked next to a couple from South Australia who were doing their 5th lap of Australia. They had very helpful hints of places to go and see in Darwin..

The next day we continued our journey to Darwin. Just before the border and as we didn’t want to waste our fruit, I made a fresh juice to drink.

We stayed at Saddle Creek Free Camp, which was overlooking a huge rock.  In the morning we met a couple of backpackers from Chile and France, who enquired about what fruit and veggie they would have to surrender at the border. As they didn’t want to waste their food, they made an omelette. I made the Chilean fellow a coffee, which he was most thankful for and to return the favour, he kindly made me an omelette.

Finally we stayed at Pussycat Flats Racecourse for $15 a night, which had an amazing birdlife which I was able to capture on video.

The next morning we continued on towards Darwin.  We visited Berry Springs for a quick dip and also the town Batchelor before heading to the casino.  We won $2 Dollars.  We made our way to the Darwin River Tavern for $10 a night which included a free washing machine and dryer.

In the morning we did the Litchfield National Park loop and swam at our favourite waterfall.  Florence Falls.  It was so cool and refreshing.  After the dip we travelled back into Darwin for the Mindi Markets where I had Laska and Sara & I shared a Seafood Paella and Sara had a mango, passionfruit and lemon sorbet.  We made our way back to Darwin River Campsite for another night before commencing the desert track to Queensland.  Stocked up at Coolalinga Coles with salads, salmon and water in the evening.

Will free camp somewhere after Katherine tomorrow.
